Admissions requirements and application

If you meet the formal and language requirements for university admission in Germany, the first step is already taken. Sometimes, some degree programmes have no admissions requirements at all, but others have.

Formal requirements

Higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung)

You can study at a German university if you have a higher education entrance qualification. Bildungsinländer have to meet other requirements than Bildungsausländer.

Bildungsinländer are students who have obtained their higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad. They can apply directly at the university or online via uni-assist.

But: Be aware that not all German schools abroad award the German school leaving examination and thus the higher education entrance qualification! Please find out in advance if your qualification corresponds to the German school leaving examination.

Bildungsausländer are students who have obtained their higher education entrance qualification at a foreign school and who can only be admitted if their school leaving qualification

  • allows for entering higher education in their home country (EU citizens and non-EU citizens) and
  • is on equal terms with the German school leaving examination (non-EU citizens).

Our advise: Check out the www.anabin.de online database to find out how your qualification is evaluated in Germany.

Info: Even if your qualification does not correspond to the German school leaving examination, you may start a Bachelor’s programme in Germany

  • if you attend a preparatory college (a conditional admission to a degree programme is necessary) and pass the entrance examination or

  • if you have already studied the discipline you want to apply for in Germany for one to two years at a recognised university in your home country.

German language skills

Besides the higher education entrance qualification, in most cases, you need very good German language skills. Those can be proven by the following certificates:

  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang level 2 (DSH2)
  • Test „Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ (TestDaF) TDN4
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom level 2 (DSD2)
  • Prüfung telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule

Our advise: Language requirements can differ from degree programme to degree programme. Please ask at your chosen university for the exact requirements.

But: Prospective German students who have obtained their university entrance qualification abroad need to pass a language test or to prove their German language skills, too.

Ways to start a degree programme

If you meet the formal and language requirements for university admission in Germany, the first step is already taken. Sometimes, some degree programmes have no admissions requirements at all, but others have.

For some programmes, you can just enrol upon receiving your higher education entrance qualification. As a general rule, admissions requirements exist for degree programmes with fewer places than applications.

The universities use different criteria when choosing the applicants.

  • Very often, the average grade of your higher education entrance qualification is relevant. That is what is meant by numerus clausus (NC). The numerus clausus is not determined in advance. It depends on the number of applicants and their grades if you will be admitted to your chosen university or not.
  • Sometimes, other criteria such as letters of motivation, professional experience and internships, assignments, interviews or weighted single grades are taken into consideration besides your average grade.

Sometimes, the average grade is not crucial at all. Instead, you have to pass specific aptitude tests. That is particularly valid for artistic programmes. Please note that the application deadlines for those programmes are usually much earlier than those for others.

Our advice: It is very important that you know how, when and with what you apply for your chosen degree programme.

But: Degree programmes with identical names at different universities can have different admissions requirements and different admissions procedures.

Uni-assist checks if your qualification allows for entering higher education in Germany. If you get a positive result uni-assist will pass over your application to the university you are interested in or you’ll get a certificate that you can use for applying directly at the university.
